The Keyblade is a most remarkable weapon: a sword in the shape of a large silver key with a gold handle. It is held by a black metal bar inside the "loophole" of the top of the key, and a keychain in the shape of the classic mouse-ears silhouette swings off its end. Sora alone can wield the blade; when someone else attempts to hold it or pick it up, it will disappear and reappear in his right hand.

The Keyblade is a legendary object, passed down from wielder to wielder since the worlds began. It has been said that only the heart that is strong and true shall win the Keyblade. However, becoming its master is a blessing and a curse: the wielder is a beacon of hope to all the worlds, and is often a powerful manipulator of the forces of light, but darkness also follows him wherever he goes.

The Heartless seek the Keyblade out of fear. They would avoid it at all cost if they were not desperate to be rid of its wielder, so they can continue devouring hearts without threat to their well-being. They can sense the Keyblade, often by "sniffing" it out.

The Keyblade of the Realm of Light is used to seal the Keyholes of each world, to prevent them from being threatened by the Heartless. It is said that once the Keyblade has closed this sacred door, it is next to impossible to open again. Thus, the Keyblade can once and for all protect a world from the forces of darkness. The Keyblade can also open many different locks, and is able to be upgraded and transformed with the addition of new keychains.

The Princesses of Heart also have a tie to the Keyblade and its wielder. In fact, the reason Kairi was led to Sora when she was sent away from Hollow Bastion by Ansem is because of her heart resonating with his: she arrived on Destiny Islands because that was where the Keyblade would next appear.

It should be noted that Riku was supposedly destined to be the Keyblade bearer when the darkness eclipsed Destiny Islands, but his decision to turn to the darkness caused the Keyblade to pass to the boy who still had some light in him: Sora. Riku also wielded the Keyblade of the realm of light for a short time in Hollow Bastion, when he took it from Sora by force. Sora was able to reclaim it during the instant that Riku's heart was "weaker than his", as Ansem put it.

Current Wielder: King Mickey
Origin: Kingdom Hearts

King Mickey aquired the Keyblade for the realm of darkness while stumbling through Kingdom Hearts. This key is identical to Sora's, except the blade is gold and the handle silver. It possesses all the power and authority of its twin, but its purpose is far different. Mickey must use this key to seal Kingdom Hearts, because two hearts and two keys are needed to close the Door to Darkness.

It is unknown by what means Mickey found or received the Keyblade, but the fact that his silhouette appears in its keychain must have some deeper meaning.

Current Wielder: Riku
Origin: given to him by Maleficent

Riku's bat-wing blade is a very uniquely-shaped weapon. It has all the characteristics of a sword--hilt, guard, and blade--but is in the shape of a large bat wing, and the entire blade is slightly curved. It is about the length of a wakazashi, roughly 2.5 feet from tip to tip.

Riku carries this blade everywhere with him, and it appears to have no special abilities, except that of magic.

Riku uses this blade in the fight against the Parasite Cage in Monstro, as well as in the Riku I battle in Hollow Bastion's entrance hall.

Wielded by: Riku (while possessed by Ansem)
Origin: Created from six of the Princesses' captive hearts

This blade is shaped like the true Keyblade, with the loophole around the handle and the key-like shape at the end, but it is quite sinister-looking compared to its lookalike. The streamlined blade is black, with the end in the shape of a curved and broken heart. The handle is red.

This Keyblade is not "authentic"--it is crafted from six Princesses of Heart's captive hearts, weaving together to form a dark mock-up of a Keyblade whose purpose is to fight and to "unlock hearts". This is demonstrated first when Riku plunges the blade into Maleficent's chest to release the darkness inside her, transforming her into a monstrous dragon.

Sora wielded this blade briefly, to plunge it into his own chest and unlock his own heart. From this self-sacrifice, Kairi's heart was released from inside his and the Keyblade disappeared, returning the captive hearts to each of the princesses. This blade has never been seen again.

Riku uses this blade in the Riku II battle in the Grand Hall of Hollow Bastion.

Gunblade
Current Wielder: Leon
Origin: Unknown (Balamb Garden?)

Leon wields the Gunblade with extraordinary power. It is a broadsword as well as a shotgun, able to fire rounds from far away as well as strike the opponent one-on-one. It specializes in the Firaga spell.

Leon uses his Gunblade against the Heartless, in tournaments, and once in an attempt to get Sora to cooperate with him upon their meeting.

Buster Sword
Current Wielder: Cloud
Origin: Unknown (Midgar?)

Cloud's buster sword may look cumbersome, but he wields it effortlessly. Roughly five feet tall and one foot wide, and covered guard to tip with battered tape, Cloud uses this broadsword to deliver few, but powerful attacks. He uses his remarkable speed to make up for its lack of moveability.

Cloud uses this sword in tournaments.
